Kohlers disease is one of those osteochondroses that occur in the very young, with a common age in those with this condition being 5 years of age. Kohlers disease is not that difficult to diagnoses as the pain usually located around the navicular, is usually unilateral and can causes the child to limp. There is very little else that can cause those symptoms at that age. Kohlers disease is usually confirmed with x-ray, and often the navicular of the affected foot is much more narrower than the unaffected foot. As the navicular is a primary bone in the arch of the foot, it is subjected to a lot of load. The primary approach to treat Kohlers disease is to reduce that load. This is done by the use of casting initially, followed by foot orthotics.
