Laser treatment for fungal toenails has been some controversial attention lately, especially based on that thread at Podiatry Arena. On the one hand, there are many claims being made for laser treatment for fungal toenails and some great success rates are being claimed. On the other hand, the FDA has only recently approved a device as being safe and there are as yet no results from independent published clinical trials. There is a trial by one of the company’s marketing a laser machine that makes claims, but it was only a small uncontrolled study that has not been published in a peer reviewed journal. There are many claims and counter claims being made for laser treatment for fungal toenails and until there is some hard evidence either way, this expensive treatment that is not yet covered by insurance companies will remain experimental.
