The Diabetic Foot

The Diabetic Foot is something that Podiatrists have the key role in its management and prevention. The term, the diabetic foot, implies that there is something about the foot that has been put at increased risk for tissue damage due to the pathophysiological processes of diabetes mellitus. Given the epidemic of increased incidence of diabetes is happening globally, that is being fuelled by the obesity epidemic, the role of podiatry in this is of increasing importance. Complications of the diabetic foot are costing health systems around the world a substantial amount of money. The role of podiatrists is to stop the diabetic foot complications from happening, to get then healed up quicker after they have happened and to do something about stopping them happening again after they have healed. This is not an easy task at times as most of those with diabetic foot complications have other co-morbidities that are affecting their health.
