The Weil Osteotomy

Who would have thought that something as innocuous as   the Weil Osteotomy would engender so much controversy. This metatarsal osteotomy that shortens the metatarsal has some indications for “metatarsalgia” and some digital deformities. There was this blog post:

The reality is that there is no rationale for this procedure. If it is of perceived to be beneficial, then it is purely by chance, and the procedure can be regarded as a “noxious placebo  …. I would welcome correspondence from those who perform Weil’s osteotomy justifying its use

In Podiatry Today, there was a point/counterpoint debate as to if the Weil osteotomy was overused. This was followed by a poll on Podiatry Arena on if the Weil Osteotomy was overused.

It appears there is a high documented complication rate associated with the Weil Osteotomy, but those that use it a lot are very confident in its use and use the procedure a lot appear not to be seeing that rate in their outcomes.

Here is the Google Scholar link to the latest research on the Weil Osteotomy.
