Windlass Mechanism

The windlass mechanism is an important part of foot biomechanics. It is the foot natural mechanism by which it supports the arch of the foot. If the windlass mechanism does not work, then there is a high risk of biomechanical problems developing in the foot. There are a number of dysfunctions that can occur in the windlass mechanism such as there being none, or there being a delay in the onset of the windlass mechanism or there being a high force to get the windlass mechanism established. What is important in foot orthotic design is that features be incorporated into the foot orthoses that are designed to facilitate the working of the windlass mechanism and overcome the dysfunctions.
